Summer is just around the corner and you know what that means – festivals!
You might be tempted to go further afield to get your fill of muddy fields and the best bands, but did you know that Nottingham has some great music festivals of its own? Every summer there is a raft of events to choose from, allowing you to stick closer to home but still enjoy the festival vibes in sunny weather. Check our picks for 2019, jam-packed with something to suit everyone.
The Best Music Events in Nottingham:
Dot To Dot
Your first big festival of the year, Dot To Dot goes from Manchester to Bristol to Nottingham. Like a lot of Notts’ best festivals, Dot To Dot started in the mid-00s, and over the years has played host to big names like The xx, Ed Sheeran, The 1975 and Ezra Furman and 2019 ought to be no different. Crystal Fighters, The Orielles and Swim Deep are all set to feature with more names still to come.
Date: Sunday 26th May
Key Artists: Crystal Fighters, Jordan Rakei, Swim Deep
One of the longest-running, most successful festivals in Nottingham is Detonate, a bass-driven day of music which spawned out of the thriving underground scene in the area. With some big names in previous years like Skepta, Chase & Status and Kurupt FM, 2019 is set to follow suit with Bugzy Malone set to feature as well as an orchestral rendition of Dr Dre’s seminal 2001 album. Held at Colwick Country Park, you’re only a bus ride away from a glorious summer.
Date: Saturday 8th June 2019
Price: General admission: £49.50 (face value)
Key Artists: DJ EZ, Bugzy Malone, Andy C
Gate to Southwell
If you’re into your roots, acoustic and folk music then Gate to Southwell Festival will be right up your street. It began back in 2007 and has grown to become an internationally renowned festival for the genres it serves. While it’s location might be a little further out than many other Nottingham based festivals – Southwell is an idyllic market town to the North-east of Notts – there is plenty to enjoy, including an Americana night, this year featuring Paul Young’s Tex-Mex band Los Pacaminos.
Date: Thursday 6th – Sunday 9th June 2019
Key Artists: Sam Kelly & The Lost Boys, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel
First starting in 2008, Splendour is a music festival unique to Nottingham. Over the last decade, it has attracted some big names for headlines acts including Scissor Sisters, Kaiser Chiefs, Dizzee Rascal and Blondie. In 2019 the festival returns to Wollaton Hall (that’s right, Bruce Wayne is throwing a party) and will feature Manic Street Preachers and The Specials on the main stage, as well as Rag’n’Bone Man and All Saints. There’s always a big attendance and when it’s set in one of the most beautiful locations in Nottingham, how could you not?
Date: Saturday 20th July 2019
Price: General admission: £51.50 (face value)
Key Artists: Manic Street Preachers, The Specials
