What to Ask at Uni Open Days

An open day is a chance to get a feel for a university. It can give you an idea of whether the university would be a good fit for you.

There will be lots of opportunities to ask questions at open days. And if you want to make the most of the day, then it’s important to ask the right questions!

In this post we’ll discuss what to ask at uni open days. We’ll also cover some other common questions you might have about the open day experience.

When Are Uni Open Days?

Universities run open days throughout the year. And if you’re unable to make it to an open day in person, you may be able to attend a virtual open day instead.

The Complete University Guide has a list of all the upcoming uni open days taking place across the country on a month-by-month basis.

What Shall I Wear to a Uni Open Day?

Technically, you can wear whatever you like to an open day. But there are a few things you should think about when picking your outfit depending on whether you’ll likely be attending an interview or what the campus is like.

An open day can be a long day, and you’ll be spending a lot of time walking around. Bear this in mind when choosing which shoes to wear. Also, you may spend a lot of time outside on a campus tour. So check the weather forecast and wear waterproofs if necessary.

An open day can also be an opportunity to make a good first impression. In fact, some universities combine open days with interviews! So while it’s not necessary to wear a suit, you might not want to go too casual.

Go for clean and comfortable clothing that makes you feel calm and at-ease. But if you’ll be attending a formal interview as part of the open day, dress to impress.

What are the facilities like?

You can ask about the university facilities, such as the students’ union, health and fitness facilities such as gyms and pools, and the on- and off-campus food and drink options. But you could also ask about the facilities for the course you’re applying for, including any dedicated study spaces.

What sort of clubs and societies are there?

Joining a club or a society at university is a great way to make new friends who share your interests. It’s not always easy to get an idea of what sort of clubs and societies there are through online browsing, so it’s a good thing to check out yourself on the open day.

What student support is there?

You might ask about accessibility, about mental health support, and about any other special support services the university offers. You could also ask if the university offers any support for students who are struggling with their studies. Can you get an extension on assignments for extenuating circumstances, for instance?

What opportunities does this course offer?

You can ask if your course provides any opportunities for travel, for exchange programmes, or for work experience. You could also ask if the uni offers any support for students who want to work during term-time. Be sure to check out our guide to finding a student part time job too.

What’s it like studying here?

You’ll probably get an opportunity to chat to some current students during your open day. Ask them about their experiences at the uni. What are the best and worst parts? Where’s the best place for a night out? Did they struggle with anything in their first year, and how did the university help them?

What’s the accommodation like?

You’ve probably got thousands of questions about student accommodation, and the open day’s a good time to ask them. You could ask about the cost of student accommodation, and when the good properties become available.

Also ask about the benefits of living on campus vs. living off campus. And ask about certain practicalities, such as whether you’re allowed to have guests come and stay, and whether you can stay in the accommodation over summer.

Be sure to check out our guide to what you should look out for when viewing student accommodation.
