We love Nottingham. And you should too! Here’s just a few reasons why Nottingham is one of the best cities in the UK for students:

Nottingham offers the best night out in the Midlands, with dozens of bars to choose from when you want to hit the town. Plus, there are dozens of places to get an excellent breakfast when you’re feeling a bit delicate the next morning. Nottingham has two universities, a vibrant live music scene, loads of lovely leafy parks, an exciting network of canals and caves to explore, and a castle.

So Nottingham’s a very student-friendly city. But if you’re new to the area, you might be wondering:

Where’s the best place to live in Nottingham, for students?

Lots of places in Nottingham fit the bill. So really, it’s just a case of choosing the area that ticks the most boxes for you. This is your essential guide to where to live in Nottingham, as a student. We’ll explore some of the most popular areas for student, and weigh up the pros and cons for each.

This’ll help you decide which area of Nottingham is best for you. And when you’re ready to make your move, get in touch and we’ll help you find your perfect student accommodation!

Living in Nottingham City Centre

If you’re looking to live in Nottingham, then why not settle right in the heart of the action? Student accommodation in the centre of Nottingham will place many of the city’s key areas and attractions right on your doorstep, including Hockley, Lace Market, and The National Ice Arena.

  • You could walk to almost anywhere you need to go.
  • You won’t have to worry about taxis, trams and buses at the end of your night out.
  • If you’re a Tent Uni student, you could be able to get to your lectures in minutes. You know what that means? A longer lie-in!

  • If you’re a student at The University of Nottingham, you’ll have to take the bus to campus. There are frequent buses, and the journey doesn’t take too long. But the fares will all add up, and the traffic jams can be a nightmare.
  • Anyone looking to live in the city centre should know that Nottingham can get loud and lairy at night!

Living in the Arboretum/Forest Fields

Still close to the centre, but a little further out and, hence, a little quieter. For many students, Arboretum offers the best of both worlds: Convenience, and a bit more peace and quiet! Forest Fields is a little further out of town from Arboretum, but still close.

  • Many of the city’s major attractions are still within walking distance.
  • Don’t fancy a walk? A tram ride to the city centre will take less than five minutes.
  • As the name suggests, Arboretum is a leafy area. The tree-filled park from which the area takes its name is the perfect place to chill after a seminar.

  • Again, The Arboretum is perfect for Trent Uni students, but perhaps not so great for University of Nottingham students. You may have to take more than one bus to reach some of the University’s campuses.
  • The Arboretum area is very hilly. You may soon grow tired of those arduous uphill walks.

Beeston is a quietly-buzzing student hotspot a few miles out of town, full of quality places to shop, eat, and drink. Seriously, the pubs in this area are amazing.

  • University of Nottingham students rejoice! University Park Campus is within walking distance of Beeston, and there are fast and frequent bus links to the Jubilee Campus and Queens Medical Centre.
  • As it’s so far out of town, life in Beeston will be a lot quieter than life in the city centre.
  • If you need some fresh air and greenery, Attenborough Nature Reserve is just down the road.

  • It can be a bit of a pain to get to the city centre from Beeston, making the area far from ideal for Trent Uni students.
  • University of Nottingham students will have to factor in the time and the cost of travelling home should you ever want a night on the town.

Lenton is a very popular area for students. It’s just as convenient for University of Nottingham students as it is for Trent Uni students. If you want to live in “student central”, then head for Lenton!

  • Lenton is a very student-y area. You’ll probably have a lot of friends living within walking distance, and you’ll soon decide which of the area’s many pubs and restaurants is your favourite.
  • Getting to pretty much any campus of either university is a relative breeze
  • Nearby Wollaton Park is a great place to head for your nature fix.

  • As the place is popular with students, there can be a lot of competition for some properties.
  • Some areas of Lenton are significantly more expensive than others. Like The Park, for example: A beautiful area if you can afford it, but the majority of students cannot!

West Bridgford

West Bridgford is one of the most desirable areas in all of Nottingham. There’s loads to see and do around here, including, of course, all the bars, pubs, cafes, restaurants and takeaways you could ever need.

  • This is studying in style! As a historic market town full of stately Victorian buildings.
  • If you want your stint as a student in Nottingham to be as un-student-y as possible, then head for West Bridgford.

  • Though there are plenty of good transport links, West Bridgford is on the other side of the River Trent, meaning it can be a hassle to get to either The University of Nottingham or Trent Uni.
  • You should expect to pay more for accommodation in this area – though you could make some savings if you can find enough friends to fill a larger house!
